Letter: Democrats seek gender equality

In 1975, when I became pregnant at 17, I was able to get an abortion in NH. I went to college, chose a profession, and later, a family. Every woman should have the right to terminate an unplanned pregnancy if the life-altering commitment to deliver and raise a child is incompatible with her chosen direction. Today, the Republican Party is determined to extinguish the right that 930,160 American women exercised in 2020, according to Guttmacher Institute. Republicans’ determination reflects a backlash against the economic and political gains that women have slowly won since Roe v Wade. America women will never attain equal citizenship, the goal of gender equality, without abortion access, which is inextricably linked to female empowerment.

The states with the most abortion restrictions are those with the widest gender wage gap and the highest maternal mortality rates according to a forthcoming publication in the Indiana Law Review and a July 28, 2022, analysis in the New York Times, respectively. Women still earn on average 17% less than men for the same work according to the July 2022 Harvard Business Review. As of 2017, we own only 32 cents of wealth for every dollar owned by men according to Motley Fool. These statistics are far worse for women of color. Abortion bans hobble women’s progress and erode our hard-won gains. If you believe in gender fairness, vote Democratic on November 8, from U.S. Senate to Congress, to state Executive Council, Senate, and House of Representatives.
